I posted this over at the EE community forum, but no response.

I have a site that currently uses Playa (for the relationships/Related Entries. I’m looking at upgrading to EE 3.4.6, and wanted to see how I would use the Relationship tag in EE for these relationships. I don’t know quite how I can manage that, though…I haven't been able to figure out how to do what I want to do.

Setup: one channel, for all entries (I really don't want to split them out into different content types.)

Example: A purple shimmer eyeshadow (ENTRY A) is part of a collection (ENTRY B), and both entries are in the same channel. So the eyeshadow would be a child of the collection, and a sibling to all other items (ENTRIES C, D, E) in that collection. So far, okay. But now I want to post links to other similar eyeshadows (let's call them ENTRY 1, ENTRY 2, ENTRY 3) from other collections. They’re eyeshadows from other vendors that are similar to this one. They’re not from the same vendor, they’re not from the same collection, and all the entries are in the same channel. So…how would I display a link to these other “related entries” of my choosing?

I =do= want to: link to up to five other items that are simlar to this item: either its parent collection, OR its children (if it’s a collection or an item in a kit); and other highly similar items from other vendors.

I =don’t= want to: link to any or every other eyeshadow that is also purple and or shimmery.

Here’s an entry with links to related items, relationships created using Playa and tags created using Solspace Tag module.

Currently, I have to designate related entries for each individual entry - which lets me keep things very specific, and is pretty straightforward. Problem is, Playa currently only works with EE2x.

  • Hi, just a comment, on sparklecrackcentral.com/such/obsessive/addictions/about there is something odd going on. – Hansl Dec 18 '16 at 17:19
  • How do you know that other entries are also eyeshadows? This would seem to be a key to finding a solution: as you describe it all you know about ENTRY A is that it is part of the collection defined in ENTRY B - but nothing about how you know it is an eyeshadow (or what colour it is, or anything else). If you explain how this product information is known, it might be possible to propose a solution - without it, not sure how anyone can help. – jcogs.eecms Dec 18 '16 at 18:13
  • Currently, I have tags for product type: eyeshadow, nail polish, lip color, et cetera. (Using SolSpace's Tag module. But I would have to look for eyeshadows that had the following tags: – LiAnn Dec 18 '16 at 18:25
  • @Gavin Currently, I have tags for product type (eyeshadow, nail polish, lip color, et cetera) and for the color, and finish. I use SolSpace's Tag module to add those to each entry. But I'd have to look for eyeshadows that had the following tags: (purple) (eyeshadow) (shimmer) AND THEN have to have some way to individually choose from among those entries. Because not all purple shimmer eyeshadows are alike. There's warm, cool, light, dark, heathered...et cetera. Tagging entries with all of those tags wouldn't work, either, because even within "dark cool purple", there are variations. – LiAnn Dec 18 '16 at 18:31
  • @Hansl Oh, the stats tag just looks like it's munged up at the bottom. That's probably because I used to have a plugin that allowed that code to display, and now it's been uninstalled. I just haven't edited that entry yet. (I'm not too worried about that, at the moment.) – LiAnn Dec 18 '16 at 18:33
