The best way to do this is to proceed carefully and make backups of your database at each step of the way. I have previously written a blog post on this, but will elaborate further. Step 1: Before running your upgrade change all ngen field types to text, don't worry the data won't be lost. Step 2: Next upgrade ExpressionEngine as per the official docs and ...

I'd say you're not missing much at this stage in the game and if you are using preprocessors then even more reason to not use EE CSS templates. With that said, I could see if you wanted to give your clients access to edit certain colors, for example href colors, then you could build something dynamic which allowed them to edit said colors via GVs, Snippets ...

Okay, this may take a while, but first, read my Low Search Primer. Now you know searching is simply filtering entries by keyword. Low Search uses its collections and their indexes for high quality keyword filtering. In a Low Search form, you can use an input field with name="keywords" to trigger filtering by keywords. Keyword filtering The Keywords filter ...

Bring the <div> inside your channel entries tag and do something like this: {exp:channel:entries channel="blog" limit="2" status="featured"} {if count == 1} <div class="panel"> <h5>Featured</h5> {/if} <p><a href="{url_title_path='eintrag/index'}">{title}</a></p> {if count == total_results} &...

Most WSoDs are caused by a PHP error that haults processing combined with configuration that prevents the error from being shows in the browser. The fastest way to debug white screen errors is to turn on logging and startup errors. The instructions below assume you are running under Apache with an Override setting that will allow php_flag and php_value ...

Luckily the add-ons you are using have some upgrade paths from EE 1 => 2... The only two you need to tweak are the file fields before and after the upgrade: nGen File Field https://stackoverflow.com/questions/13041491/expressionengine-1-to-expressionengine-2-upgrade-with-ngen-file-field File by Mark Hout http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/218268/ Other ...

You need to create a custom config file for CKEditor that redefines how HTML is generated for images. Create a JavaScript file called something like 'ckeditor_config.js' and then set Wygwam to use it. You can do this by adding an advanced setting to your Wygwam editor configuration. Add the 'customConfig' setting and enter the path to the JavaScript file you ...

Any existing non-commercial licenses have been automatically upgraded. As stated in their blog post ExpressionEngine License Simplification: Previous license types have been upgraded for free. Whether you purchased a Freelancer license at $99.95 or a Non-Commercial license at $149.95, if you look at your existing purchases, you’ll see no differentiation. ...

There are several strategies for best utilizing 404s on a Structure site: Hide Structure Templates to Prevent Duplicate URLs First, make sure that any Structure-assigned templates are either hidden, or inside a hidden template group (prepend the group or template name with "_" or "." - so "_blog" or ".blog"). This ensures that there is no duplicate EE URL ...

READ FIRST: Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard Do you really looked over all risks of this? The field encryption is not what you need to worry about in this case. I don't even want to advise something about encryption, because I feeling really bad even about this idea. It's no good solution to keep CC info secure enough this way . To keep such ...

I've been using Snaptcha http://devot-ee.com/add-ons/snaptcha on my recent sites, I can attest that it works very well, No one enjoys filling out these captchas anyway, and their efficacy is doubtful anyway.

I asked this same question for a recent EE upgrade. The answer is on Stack Overflow: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/13041491/expressionengine-1-to-expressionengine-2-upgrade-with-ngen-file-field The EE2 equivalent field is Safecracker File. Worked perfectly for my upgrade.

If you just need to modify the part of the URL before the pagination segment (and your use case is relatively simple) you can use the paginate_base parameter on your entries loop (docs here): {exp:channel:entries paginate_base="blog/foo" {pagination_links} {page} <a href="{pagination_url}">{pagination_page_number}</a> {/page} ...

Preparse vars are best used for simple bits of data, not large chunks of code. This is because the Preparse vars are passed along to the variable content by means of a parameter, and large amounts of data (with line breaks, etc...) inside a parameter is never a good idea. Looking at your example, there aren't any embed variables being passed through the ...

You can detect EE by couple parameters like form uniq for EE names/hidden inputs fields, category short names, page count segment, ACT segment or cookies prefix. DO NOT STORE FULL CREDIT CARD INFO ON YOUR OWN SERVER. Even if encrypted, storing full credit card data on your own server is generally a very bad idea due to the security and legal ramifications should your website/database/server ever be compromised. If you already have the auto_login field in your login form and it's just not working, you are probably running into a long standing bug where Remember Me just doesn't work consistently or correctly. I'll attempt to keep this answer opinion free! Your first stop should be the EE3 changelog, and also catching up on the EllisLab blog over the past 6 months. But you'll also need to look at the EE2 changelog to see all the changes since your version that are also included in EE3. The main changes are the infrastructure and Control Panel but it's where the ...

Very rarely will I run CSS through EE. There are times when it's useful as Nate has said but generally it's another load on the template parser that doesn't need to be there. I also generally keep my 404 page outside of EE as well because it's another db load that doesn't need to be there. I never edit templates in production either.

A white screen of death normally means that a PHP error has occurred but it's being suppressed. They should normally be shown if you are logged in as a superadmin but sometimes aren't depending on your config. Here's some things to try to make the error visible: Go into your admin.php and change $debug to 1 instead of 0 (it's under "Error Reporting"). ...

There are a couple of ways to create plugins which return entry IDs like that. The first, and most obvious, is for your plugin to return a pipe-separated list of entries, which is then passed to a channel entries tag. In your plugin file: $tag_vars = array(array('search_entry_ids' => '4|6|12|19')); $this->return_data = $this->EE->TMPL->...

I'd recommend you taking a look at Mark Croxton's if:else and switchee plugins. They allow you to use advanced conditionals (and switches) without the overhead of having all your conditions parsed, which is the default EE behaviour. They're a fantastic way of optimising your site and I'd encourage you to start using them whenever you have a need for ...

I've recently done about 8 EE1 to EE2 upgrades. For the most part everything went really smoothly. The key is to prepare and backup, backup, backup. Did I mention you should backup? Use the native upgrade wizard and be sure to follow the instructions carefully. The download for structure includes a separate folder for upgrading structure 1 to structure 2. ...

As far as I know ExpressionEngine will use one or the other, SHA1 or MD5 (I believe SHA1 is the default). In my test it actually worked to use either one when replacing the password, allowing me to login just fine in both cases. You can use MySQL to generate a new password hash for yourself. For example either SELECT SHA1('pass123') or SELECT MD5('pass123') ...

It seems like putting an if:else inside your simple conditional makes it an advanced conditional, thus affecting parsing order. In other words, suppose segment_1 is empty: {if segment_1 != ""} EE tags placed here won't be parsed {/if} vs. {if segment_1 != ""} EE tags placed here WILL be parsed {if segment_1 != ""} // something here {...

So some quick googling, while MediaGirl was typing, found the answer here. When EE updates, it’s running through each update file in order, and those update files can be found at /system/installer/updates/. They look like ud_231.php, where 231 is the version number that’s being updated. When EE finishes running through the routines in that update ...

You're correct that the native search:field_name param only works on custom fields and not titles, annoyingly, so we do need an addon to do this. Stash is overkill for this use case though and requires a lot of code to get the (fairly simple) job done. I'd use another fine Croxton product instead: the Search Fields Plugin, just wrap it around your {exp:...

There is no native way to add additional fields to the EE Comment module, no. Freeform could work. You would have to have a hidden field that stored the entry_id of the entry being commented on, so that you could then use search:comment_entry_id="{entry_id}" when listing the comments with the Freeform Entries tag. (Note that you'd likely have to either ...
